We’re excited that you’re exploring the next step in your college journey with us. Here at 51��, we value passion, relentless determination, and having the confidence to go where others haven’t. Your application is a chance to show us the real you—and we can’t wait to see what personal and academic talents make you shine.

We consider you to be a first-year student if you are a current high school student, (regardless of total completed college credits while in high school) or if you have graduated from high school but have not enrolled at a college, university or other degree-granting institution after high school.

If you’ve already finished high school and have previously enrolled at a college or university, please refer to the transfer student application��page.

Applicants can transfer up to 64 credits of college-level coursework from high school, including 20 credits from AP or IB programs. Visit transferring credits��for more information.

51�� is test-optional

At 51��, we believe students should drive their own destinies. You'll find this starts from the moment you apply for admission. We'll evaluate your admission application holistically for undergraduate admission whether or not you choose to submit a test score from the SAT or ACT. 100% of admitted students, regardless of test submission, are eligible and considered for 51�� merit scholarships.��

First-year application checklist: It’s as easy as 1-2-3-4

Applying to college takes time, so we’ve made it as easy as possible to get things done. Refer to the list below to complete your application, and you’ll be that much closer to celebrating your future acceptances.

First-year application checklist

Decide which application is best for you. The 51�� Application is available online and is sent immediately to our admission office. If you’re applying to multiple schools, you may want to use the Common App to save time. Remember, there’s no application fee to apply to 51��!��

A few things you’ll need:
- Information about your high school coursework, grades, and class rank
- Contact information for your high school counselor and any recommenders you are using
- A list of your honors and awards
- A list of your activities
- Written essay(s), depending on which application you choose

Official high school transcript

Submit your official high school transcript, including a list of senior courses. Transcripts must be sent directly from your school.

Test scores (optional)

51�� is proudly test-optional because we believe students are more than their test scores. We’ll evaluate your application holistically, whether or not you submit standardized test scores from the SAT or ACT. (If you opt for test-optional admission, you’ll still be eligible for merit scholarships.)

Your official high school transcript may already include your test scores. If not, send your scores directly from the College Board or the ACT using 51��’s school codes:

Recommendation letter (optional)

Letters of recommendation are encouraged, but not required. If you choose to submit a recommendation, it must come directly from the counselor, teacher, or advisor. All letters can be submitted through the electronic delivery method in place at your school or emailed to admission@hamline.edu. We recommend asking them to describe your academic achievements, leadership record, and potential for success in college.

If you’re using the Common App, your counselor should submit the counselor recommendation through that program. If needed, you can download a teacher recommendation form from the Paper Forms section below.

We recommend talking to both your school counselor and parents or family to decide when to apply. Early Action (EA) is nonbinding, so there’s no commitment to attend and you can apply to other colleges.��

To confirm enrollment, admitted applicants must submit a $400 deposit that credits toward tuition. Deposits need to be postmarked by May 1, the National Reply Date. If you’ll be joining 51�� soon, welcome! Take a look through our admitted students��page to see what’s ahead.

We look for go-getters like you

At 51��, we’re seeking bold, passionate, and purpose-driven students who want to make an impact. Our admission requirements ensure that applicants have developed the writing, speaking, reasoning, and study skills to be successful in college. The two most important criteria we evaluate are high school course selection and performance in academic subjects. We also look at class rank, test scores (if submitted), recommendations (if submitted), and other indicators of academic achievement or leadership ability.

Some applicants will be invited to complete an admission interview. While not required, we strongly encourage you to participate if you can. It’s an amazing opportunity for us to get to know you better—and for you to share your passions.

Four years of English with one��year of college prep writing
Three years of math (two years of algebra and one year of geometry)
Three years of science with lab experience
Three years of social science
Two years of a foreign language
